A Merry Little Sporting Dog

Breed fans often describe the Cocker Spaniel as merry, and the word fits. Cockers were developed as small hunting spaniels whose job was to work close to their people, flushing birds from hedges and tall grass. That background left them with a happy, busy temperament, a wagging tail that rarely stops and a deep desire to stay near the family. Today most Cockers never see a field, but you will still see that sporting spirit when he chases a ball across the living room or follows a scent in the backyard.

Unlike some independent breeds, Cockers tend to check in with their owners constantly. They want to know where you are, what you are doing and whether they can help. For many households, that devotion is exactly what makes the breed so rewarding.

Chocolate With Tan Points

His coat combines two shades: a deep chocolate base and tan markings in specific places, a pattern known as tan points. On a Cocker these markings usually appear above each eye, on the muzzle and cheeks, on the chest and on the lower legs. On this boy the tan eyebrows are especially vivid, which gives his face a remarkably expressive look, almost as if he is raising an eyebrow at you. As his adult coat grows in, the contrast between the chocolate and tan will become even more defined.

Play and Exercise for an Energetic Boy

A Cocker needs daily activity to stay happy, but he does not require marathon workouts. Right now, short play sessions spread throughout the day are perfect for his growing body.

• Indoor fetch: Soft toys tossed down a hallway let him burn energy without hard impacts on young joints.
• Sniffing games: Hide small treats under a towel and let his spaniel nose do the work.
• Short walks: Once your veterinarian gives the green light, two brief walks a day are a great start.
• Puzzle feeders: Turning mealtime into a game keeps his clever mind busy.

Feeding a Growing Cocker

Puppies his age usually eat three or four small meals a day. Ask our team which food he is eating now so you can keep his diet consistent during the first weeks at home, then talk with your veterinarian before making any changes. Cockers love to eat, so measuring meals and keeping treats small helps him grow at a healthy pace and stay trim as an adult.

What to Expect as He Grows

An adult male American Cocker typically stands about 14.5 to 15.5 inches tall and weighs roughly 25 to 30 pounds. He will grow quickly over the next few months and reach most of his adult height around one year of age. With good care the breed commonly lives around 10 to 14 years.

Grooming Routine for Curls and Feathering

Curly puppies like him benefit from early grooming practice. Brush him a few times a week with a pin brush, comb through the feathering on his legs and ears, and gently wipe his face after meals. Check and clean his ears weekly, since long spaniel ears can hold moisture in humid weather. A professional trim every six to eight weeks keeps him comfortable, and a shorter summer cut is a popular choice for families in South Florida.

Great With Families

Cocker Spaniels are known for their gentle, affectionate nature, and they usually get along well with children who have learned to handle a puppy kindly. Teach kids to sit on the floor when holding him, to let him come to them and to give him quiet time when he naps. With early socialization, he can grow into a polite, confident dog who enjoys visitors and family gatherings.
