He was born on August 14, 2026, so he is about nine weeks old today. Right now he is learning how the world works, one discovery at a time. He loves to burrow into soft blankets, and the moment he hears a voice he likes, those big ears stand straight up and his tail starts to wag. It is a sweet stage, and a perfect time for him to start bonding with a new family.

Is a Yorkie the Right Dog for Your Home?

Before choosing any breed, it helps to picture daily life together. A Yorkie is a true companion dog. He wants to be where you are, whether that means sitting beside you while you work, riding along in a carrier on errands to dog-friendly places, or snuggling under a blanket during movie night. If your family enjoys having a little shadow around the house, this breed is a lovely match.

A Good Fit For

• Apartment and condo living: Yorkies are small and do not need a big yard.
• Seniors and couples: Their affectionate nature makes them devoted lap companions.
• Families with older kids: Children who can handle a small puppy gently will find a playful friend.
• People who prefer low shedding: Their hair-like coat sheds very little.

From English Mills to Miami Living Rooms

The breed takes its name from Yorkshire, England, where it was developed during the Industrial Revolution. These small terriers worked in textile mills and coal mines catching rats, and their courage was legendary. By the late nineteenth century, the Yorkie had moved from the factory floor to the drawing room, where its glossy coat and lively spirit made it a favorite of fashionable households.

Today that same courage and charm show up in a different way. A modern Yorkie is a confident little dog who greets life with enthusiasm, keeps an eye on the front door and fills a home with personality far larger than his size.

How Big Will He Get?

Most adult Yorkshire Terriers weigh between 4 and 7 pounds and stand about 7 to 8 inches tall. Puppies grow quickly in the first few months, then slow down, reaching adult size close to their first birthday. The breed commonly lives 13 to 16 years with good care, which means many happy years ahead with your new friend.

Daily Routine and Exercise

Yorkies have plenty of energy, but their needs are easy to meet. A couple of short walks a day plus indoor games are usually enough. In Miami, plan walks for early morning or evening when the sidewalks are cooler, and always bring water. On rainy afternoons, a game of chase down the hallway or a puzzle toy will keep him happily busy.

Grooming That Silky Coat

The Yorkie coat is fine, silky and grows much like human hair. Many owners keep it in a short puppy trim for easy care, while others love the long, flowing look. Either way, plan to brush him several times a week, bathe him every few weeks and keep the hair around his eyes neat. His black-and-tan coloring will likely change as he matures, with the black lightening toward blue and the tan deepening to gold. Weekly ear checks, regular nail trims and tooth brushing round out his routine.

Teaching Good Manners Early

Yorkies are bright and respond well to positive training. Keep sessions short and fun, reward good choices right away and stay consistent with house training, as small breeds may need a little extra patience. Gentle exposure to new sounds, friendly people and calm, vaccinated dogs builds confidence. Follow your veterinarian’s guidance on when he can safely explore public spaces.
