His friendly, easygoing look suggests a puppy who will fit right into a busy family, an active couple or a home where someone is around to share long cuddles on the couch.

The Story Behind the Cavapoo

The Cavapoo began as an intentional cross between the gentle Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the bright, athletic Poodle. Breeders hoped to bring together the Cavalier’s warm heart and the Poodle’s quick mind and curly coat. Over the past few decades, the mix has grown into one of the most sought-after companion dogs in America, loved for its friendly nature and teddy-bear appearance.

What Makes a Merle Coat Special

Merle is a coat pattern that creates patches of darker color over a lighter, marbled base. No two merle puppies look exactly alike, so his particular mix of grey, black, tan and white belongs to him alone. As he grows, his patches may soften or shift slightly as his adult coat comes in, which is part of the fun of watching a merle puppy mature. A caring owner should keep an eye on eye and ear health, as with any dog, and stay in touch with a veterinarian for routine checkups.

Caring for His Curly Coat

• Brushing: Several times a week with a slicker brush and comb to keep curls tangle-free.
• Grooming: A professional trim every six to eight weeks keeps him neat and cool.
• Ears: Weekly checks and gentle cleaning, especially after baths or swims.
• Shedding: Usually very light, though no dog can be called completely allergy-free.

Personality: Playful, Loyal and Bright

Cavapoo boys are often described as big-hearted clowns. They enjoy fetch, tug and puzzle toys, but they also love settling down beside their favorite people. Most Cavapoos are friendly with kids, guests and other pets, and they tend to form a very close bond with their family.

How Big Will He Grow?

Adult size depends on his parents, but most Cavapoos weigh around 9 to 25 pounds and stand roughly 9 to 14 inches tall. Males often reach the middle or upper part of that range. He will do most of his growing during his first year, and with good care the breed typically lives 12 to 15 years.

Smart Training Tips for a Cavapoo Boy

With Poodle intelligence in the mix, he will pick up new skills quickly. Use short, upbeat sessions with treats and praise, and keep rules consistent across the whole household. Start with his name, sit, down and come, and introduce a leash and harness indoors before heading outside. A crate with a soft blanket can become his safe spot and help with housetraining.

Socialization makes a big difference for a confident adult dog. Let him meet calm, friendly people, hear everyday noises and try new surfaces, always at his own pace. Ask your veterinarian when it is safe to visit public spaces and meet other dogs as his vaccine series continues.
