Born on August 13, 2026, he is about nine weeks old today. He is at that delightful stage where every sound gets a tilt of the head and every new person is a possible best friend. His alert, engaged expression suggests a puppy who loves to watch what is going on and join in, making him a fun fit for an active household, a couple who enjoys company at home or a family with gentle older kids.

Why the Shih Tzu Has Charmed People for Centuries

Few breeds have a history as storied as the Shih Tzu. Developed from ancient Tibetan dogs and refined in the Chinese imperial court, these “little lion dogs” were cherished as palace companions and were rarely seen outside royal households. The breed reached Europe in the 1930s and soon won hearts around the world. Their purpose has never changed: to bring warmth, comfort and good company to the people they love.

Personality: Curious, Social and Sweet

From the way #6122 meets the camera, you can tell he is an observer. Many Shih Tzus are social little dogs who enjoy greeting guests, following conversations and being included in daily routines. They are playful without being hyper, and they usually adjust well to the rhythm of their family.

Is He the Right Match for You?

• Great for: apartments, condos, first-time owners and people who spend plenty of time at home.
• Loves: short walks, squeaky toys, gentle play and a warm lap.
• Needs: regular grooming, company and patient, positive guidance.

Teaching Good Habits From Day One

A puppy his age learns quickly when lessons are short, cheerful and rewarded. Start with his name, a simple sit and coming when called. Crate training can give him a cozy den of his own and make housetraining easier. Shih Tzus can be a little stubborn at times, so consistency and praise work far better than raised voices.

Early, gentle socialization helps him grow into a confident adult. Invite calm friends over, let him hear the vacuum and the doorbell from a distance, and introduce grooming tools as a fun, treat-filled routine. Ask your veterinarian when it is safe to meet other dogs and visit public spaces as his vaccines continue.

How Big Will He Get?

As a toy breed, the Shih Tzu stays small but solid. Adults usually measure about 9 to 10.5 inches at the shoulder and weigh around 9 to 16 pounds. Growth slows down around ten months of age. With attentive care, many Shih Tzus enjoy 10 to 16 years with their families, so he can be your companion through many seasons of life.

Grooming His Fluffy Coat

His tri-color coat will gradually lengthen into a soft, flowing coat. Shih Tzus are considered low-shedding, though every person reacts differently and no breed is truly allergy-free. Plan on brushing several times a week, a bath every few weeks and regular visits to a groomer. A short puppy cut keeps maintenance easy in Miami’s warm weather. Clean around his eyes daily, check his ears and keep his nails trimmed.
