An Ancient Breed With a Royal Past

The Pug is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, with roots in China more than two thousand years ago. Pugs were treasured by Chinese emperors and often lived in royal palaces. Dutch traders later brought them to Europe, where they became favorites of nobility and even served as a symbol of the House of Orange in the Netherlands.

Throughout their long history, Pugs have been bred for one main purpose: to be wonderful companions. That focus shows in everything they do, from following their families around the house to curling up on the nearest lap.

The Pug Personality

Pugs are famous for their charm and sense of humor. They are friendly with almost everyone, usually get along well with children and other pets, and love to be the center of attention. They are even-tempered and adaptable, which makes them a great choice for many types of households.

Why Families Fall for Pugs

• Affection: Pugs are devoted and love physical closeness.
• Easygoing nature: They are generally calm indoors and happy with moderate activity.
• Clownish charm: Their expressions and playful antics are endlessly entertaining.
• Great with people: They tend to welcome guests and enjoy family gatherings.

Size and Growth

Adult Pugs typically weigh 14 to 18 pounds and stand about 10 to 13 inches tall. They have a compact, square body that feels solid when you hold them. Most reach adult size by about one year, and with good care the breed commonly lives 12 to 15 years, giving your family many years of laughter and cuddles.

Coat Care and Wrinkle Care

His fawn coat is short and smooth, with a soft feel, and the black mask and ears create the classic Pug look. Pugs do shed, so a quick brushing a few times a week helps keep loose hair under control. A bath every month or so is usually plenty.

The facial wrinkles are one of their most adorable features, and they need gentle attention. Wipe the folds with a soft, damp cloth a few times a week and dry them well. Check his ears weekly, trim his nails regularly and brush his teeth to support healthy habits from the start.

Health and Comfort for a Flat-Faced Breed

Pugs are a brachycephalic, or flat-faced, breed, which means they can be sensitive to heat and heavy exercise. This is especially important in South Florida. Keep walks short and schedule them in the early morning or evening, always provide fresh water and give him a cool, air-conditioned place to rest. Using a harness instead of a collar is often recommended for Pugs to keep pressure off the neck. Pugs also love food, so measured meals and healthy treats help keep him at a good weight. Regular veterinary checkups will help him stay healthy as he grows.

Training Your Pug Puppy

Pugs are smart and food-motivated, which makes positive training very effective. Short, cheerful sessions with small treats work well. Start with his name, sit, come and house training on a regular schedule. Pugs can be a little stubborn at times, so patience and consistency go a long way.

Early socialization helps him become a confident, well-mannered adult. Introduce him gently to new people, household sounds and calm, vaccinated dogs. Your veterinarian can advise when he can safely visit public places as his vaccine schedule continues.
